An inspector from the General Medical Council arrives to monitor Martin's practice as a requirement following his tribunal hearing. Louisa tries to make a good first impression, but Martin hates having another doctor in the surgery.

Martin and Louisa attend their first fertility consultation, but Martin struggles to adapt to being the patient instead of the doctor. Penhale investigates a case of vandalism at a local surf school, and Louisa prepares for her first supervised counseling session.

As part of the inspector's recommendation, Martin is forced to attend refresher courses, starting with phlebotomy. While Louisa worries that James is struggling to make friends, she attempts to befriend the oblivious new school head. Bert's cousin arrives with a business proposition for the Larges.

Louisa is hit by a car and rushed to the hospital, where she tells Martin some shocking news. Mike's shady past comes to light, and Al's dad dismisses his business plan.

Louisa prepares to leave for Spain, Bert and Jennifer's engagement party goes off with a bang, and Al engages in some heroics.

Martin stops practicing the week before his hearing, but patients continue to solicit his advice. An American tourist asks Mrs. Tishell for help, and Penhale commissions a bust of himself.

After successfully rekindling their relationship, Louisa and Martin are living together again, but Louisa finds herself juggling too many responsibilities at once. As Portwenn prepares for a wedding, Bert hopes to profit from the festivities.

Penhale and Morwenna participate in the annual gig race against another town. Louisa buys a new car, and Martin's blood phobia causes a disaster with a patient.
